STORY
Foster’s Barber Shop was founded in 1965 by Mr. Nathaniel Foster. It’s hard to find someone like him. Back in the day, Mr. Foster had a reputation for doing things differently. He was a mentor to everyone who walked into his shop. He had a strong, humble character, a witty sense of humor, and was well-known both in and outside of the neighborhood. He built a fatherly legacy with a diverse clientele of Black, White, Caribbean, Italian and other immigrants, including school teachers, celebrities, professional athletes, and more. He was also known for helping people with everyday problems. Quite often, Mr. Foster was thanked with delicious homemade family recipes, which he would share with his clients. Life lessons, history, people, and more were a part of the experience at Foster’s.
This is the kind of barbershop Ben found his way into. Ben was a customer of Mr. Foster as a child, and then one day, many years later Ben walked in and asked if Mr. Foster would rent him a chair. They worked together for 8 years. When Mr. Foster was no longer able, he felt that Ben could continue the legacy he had started. With his blessing, Ben bought the barbershop. While honoring Mr. Foster’s vision, Ben updated the shop while preserving the authenticity and homey feel that Foster’s Barber Shop was always known for.

Foster’s Barber Shop is located on West Tampa’s historic Main Street.
West Tampa’s Main Street is a historic corridor that embodies the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Tampa, Florida. Established in the late 19th century, this vibrant street became the heart of a thriving community, fueled by the influx of Caribbean, Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants.
These settlers were instrumental in shaping the area’s character, particularly through the cigar industry, which served as a cornerstone of the local economy and culture.
Main Street is lined with beautifully preserved buildings showcasing a blend of Mediterranean Revival and early 20th-century commercial styles, reflecting the diverse influences that have defined the neighborhood.
Today, it remains a lively hub, celebrating its multicultural roots through a variety of shops, restaurants, and community events, making it a cherished landmark that connects Tampa’s past with its present.
