OUR
STORY
The Rich Cultural History Of Tampa
The Roosters and Chickens in Ybor City and West Tampa roam freely due to their historical and cultural significance.
Ybor City, founded in the late 19th century by Cuban, Spanish,Italian immigrants along with African Americans
was once a bustling cigar-making hub. Many of the immigrant workers kept chickens for eggs, meat and even as pets. Over time, as urbanization increased and backyard farming declined, some of these chickens were released or escaped and began living in the wild.
Today, the free-roaming chickens are considered a symbol of Ybor City’s rich history and unique character.
They are protected under Tampa’s city ordinances, making it illegal to harm or remove them without proper authorization. Locals and visitors alike see them as part of the area’s charm, embodying its blend of history, culture and quirkiness.
So “ROOS” short for Rooster, is a character created to reflect that story and “The Rich Cultural History Of Tampa.“
